Our History How the IAPM Got its Start In 1994, there was an initial suggestion of creating a network of printing museums around the world. This was then prompted by a very successful conference that was organized in 2016 in Cheongju, Republic of Korea. The aim of the conference was to gather printing museums and individuals in the field of printing heritage and closely related fiends, in order to bring something to the fore. More than 47 institutions and specialists from 21 countries participated and shared a common vision to cooperate for the prosperity of printing culture. A Working Group was set up and an official workshop convened in Cheongju in the fall of 2017, laying the groundwork for the establishment of the Association. The IAPM was officially established on August 30, 2018 and received its members during the first General Meeting on October 1, 2018. This founding meeting was attended by some 80 international delegates, including representatives from 20 countries around the world. 2018 Official Establishment of IAPM Founding Meeting, 2018 IAPM Conference “Be Open” (Cheongju, Korea) 2017 IAPM Working Group European Part Meeting (Chania, Greece) IAPM Working Group Workshop (Cheongju, Korea) 2016 IAPM Meeting and Conference (Cheongju, Korea) 2015 Survey on the need for a printing network A Working-level meeting on the establishment of the IAPM (Germany) 2014 Initial suggestion of IAPM network establishment Expanding Our Network Connecting Printing Museums Around the World By 2020, the IAPM had grown to over 45 institutions from 21 countries. Meun About Us > History
Welcome to the IAPM, the International Association of Printing Museums. It has been my good fortune to stumble across the world of printing and embark on a quest to establish a national museum of printing and a book arts centre in my own country. In search of answers or simply to satisfy my own curiosity I have visited institutions and met like-minded people in different corners of the globe. It is an honour to have been involved in the establishment of the Association. The Board of the IAPM looks forward to your thoughts, ideas and energy to build on the foundations that have been laid. IN HONOR OF KOREA 2022 Special Joint Exhibition with the Member of the IAPM Treasures from the Klingspor Museum September 2 – October 16, 2022 Gallery 3, Culture Factory Cheongju, Republic of Korea Introduction The Klingspor Museum in Offenbach, one of the most renowned museums of typography and book art, presented itself in Cheongju - the city where the Jikji, the oldest surviving book printed by movable metal types, was published. In 2021, the city of Cheongju invited the members of the International Association of Printing Museums (IAPM) to submit proposals for a special exhibition for the 2022 JIKJI Festival. The Klingpor Museum was selected as the finalist and worked closely with the Cheongju Early Printing Museum on the joint organization of the exhibition. To express its gratitude and friendship with Korea, the Klingspor Museum presented some of its nest collections in the arrangement of the Korean flag. As a guest in Cheongju, the Klingspor Museum expressed its great respect for the special tradition of the city, which, with the Book of Jikji (created in 1377), can claim world significance for the history of the art of printing. The Klingspor Museum, for its part, is an internationally renowned address for this very subject. It is based on the type foundry Gebrüder (Brothers) Klingspor, which gave impetus to the promotion of the art of lettering in the first half of the 20th century. The invitation to this exhibition was extended by the International Association of Printing Museums (IAPM) together with the Early Printing Museum in Cheongju. The aim is to stimulate international exchange on the history and future of the art of writing and printing. Museums and libraries around the world are working to preserve the knowledge of the historical art of graphic communication and offer themselves as forums for today's protagonists, old and young alike, who still practice the use of original graphic techniques as a current quality of manifestati
